One of the best English Victorian silver lockets we've ever had, with a stunning scene to the front depicting two geese taking off from a lake or river against a backdrop of autumn trees and a cosy little house.
No marks, tests as solid silver and applied gold of at least 9K. Wonderful size!
Like many English aesthetic movement era pieces, it's inspired by the Japanese motif of 'Rakugan', 'descending geese'. But being made in the UK, the seasonal movements of the migratory birds is the opposite to that seen in the similarly-themed Japanese geese piece also listed this week - here the birds are leaving in the Autumn in search of warmer climes, rather than returning. The beautiful large tree to the left is shown with a thick gold textured trunk, but the top part is skeletal and twiggy, as it drops its leaves for winter.
The rose gold applied geese are just gorgeous in their detail, flight feathers all engraved in, with the bottom bird appearing to make a little quack and the top bird more stoic. The little trailing legs are a little too adorable. This is just such a beautiful piece of wearable art with so much detail.
The edges of the locket are prettily scalloped, and the locket opens and closes securely on a good hinge. Original large saddle bail to the top. Inside, both silver retainer frames are present and one glass.
MEASUREMENTS: 1 15/16" top to bottom across the body of the locket only, approx 2 5/8" total drop including the top bail. 20.4g in weight.
CONDITION: Very good, wearable antique condition - please view all close-up photos/video. There is one very small, shallow impression to the bottom left front, difficult to notice in wear. Any display chains or boxes shown are for photography purposes only.
